Majestic, divine, powerful. But also social. That was my first impression of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. You walk in expecting to feel small, and you do. But you also feel part of something. How do you get to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?

The entrance runs through the Souk Al Jami mall, which makes navigation easy: indoors, air-conditioned, with clear signs throughout. The corridor is wide, and there are moving walkways, similar to what you find in airports. From the parking area to the outdoor zone of the mosque, allow around 20 to 25 minutes on foot.

The mosque is about 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi city centre. From Dubai, the drive takes 90 to 120 minutes depending on traffic.

We arrived at noon, which is close to peak hours, so the walkway was busy. Even then, the flow of people moved well. By the time you reach the courtyard, you have already adjusted to the pace of the place.

What happens at the security check?

Your bag goes through an X-ray scanner. If something is not allowed, security holds it temporarily, gives you a ticket, and you collect it on the way out. The system is well organised and fast.

During my visit, someone in our group brought a microphone that the guards initially mistook for a drone. They handled it calmly, explained the issue clearly, and the whole thing took less than two minutes to sort out.

What is the outdoor area like?

When you step into the open courtyard, everything is white and bright. The walls reflect the sunlight in every direction. This is where most people take the classic photos with the arches in the background. Sunglasses are a necessity, not a preference. A head covering helps too, unless you are visiting after sunset.

Free umbrellas are available to borrow for sun protection while you walk. Staff will ask you to close them under the covered roof.

It is lively, open, and social. People arrive with professional cameras; almost everyone is filming something. Yet it does not feel chaotic. The scale of the courtyard absorbs the crowds.

What surprised me most was the marble. The floor, the arches, the columns: all covered in bright white stone that reflects the sun like a mirror. At midday you feel like you are walking through something glowing. The floral inlays are not painted; they are real stone mosaics carved into the surface. The marble stays cool under your feet. You notice the detail immediately.

What does the inside look like?

Inside, the space feels tighter and more crowded than the courtyard. But the scale of the architecture is impossible to ignore. The ceiling rises high enough that you instinctively look up. The columns are thick and decorated from base to top. The whole interior tells you with its presence: I am the main thing here.

And it really is.

You can take photos indoors as well, as long as you keep it calm and quiet. There are marked no-photo zones, but most of the prayer hall is open to personal photography.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque carpet: a hidden marvel

Inside the main prayer hall is one detail many visitors walk over without fully registering: the world's largest hand-knotted carpet.

According to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, the carpet spans 5,627 square metres, weighs around 35 tons, and was woven by 1,200 artisans over nearly two years. Made of fine wool and cotton, it has raised ridges that mark prayer lines and floral medallions that align exactly with the chandeliers above. It covers the entire floor of the prayer hall and adds warmth to what would otherwise be a very cold, marble-heavy space.

Visitors are asked to remove their shoes before stepping on it. Worth doing slowly. Even without studying the detail up close, the size and harmony of the carpet change how the room feels.

The prayer rows are woven in as raised ridges. 1,200 artisans spent nearly two years making this carpet.

How it feels when you leave

When you exit and walk back through the corridor, everyone looks calmer. You feel like you have just closed a chapter. The brightness, the silence, the scale of the place follows you back into normal life.

You see the same people you walked in with: tourists from different countries, families with children, couples, solo travellers. And somehow everyone is quieter now. You have just been inside something dramatic, bright, and sacred. And then it softens.

When is the best time to visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?

The mosque is open year-round from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, except on Fridays when it closes from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Between May and October, go early in the morning or in the evening. Midday sun during this period is significant, and the outdoor marble amplifies it.

Sunset is the most scenic time: the light turns the white stone golden and everything shifts in colour. It is also the most crowded, so go with enough time to find a good spot and move at your own pace.

For a comfortable visit without rushing, allow 1.5 to 2 hours. If you want slower photography or golden-hour shots, budget 2 to 3 hours.

What is the dress code at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?

Women Cover your shoulders, arms, and legs. Clothes should be loose and ankle-length. A headscarf is required. If you do not have one, scarves and abayas are available to buy inside. It also makes a good souvenir to bring home.
Men Cover your shoulders and knees. Long shorts work, as do jeans or chinos. A loose shirt that covers the elbows is comfortable and appropriate. Men can also buy a traditional white Emirati robe inside if they want.

Overall: bring something modest, respectful, and easy to walk in. The dress code is clear and consistently enforced, so there is no ambiguity at the entrance.

What are the rules inside the mosque?

  • Men and women cannot touch each other while inside (except a gentle hand on the shoulder from behind for a photo)
  • No expressive gestures: no peace signs, no spinning, no waving arms
  • Personal photos and quiet videos are allowed; talking while recording is not, so vlogging is off-limits
  • Photo-friendly areas and no-photo zones are marked with signs throughout

A note on the staff

I spoke with three different security guards during my visit. All of them were friendly, gave consistent information, and explained the rules without being heavy-handed. If you are unsure about anything, ask them directly.

Everything inside is based on respect for culture, religion, and tradition. Follow that principle and the rest falls into place.

How should you behave inside the mosque?

Do

  • Walk calmly and avoid rushing
  • Keep your voice low, especially indoors
  • Stand still for photos rather than posing dramatically
  • Follow the guided walking paths
  • Listen to staff instructions
  • Step aside when staff need space in a corridor

Avoid

  • Lying or sitting on the marble for photos
  • Wrapping arms around each other romantically
  • Expressive gestures or dramatic posing
  • Loud background music for videos
  • Running or playful behaviour
  • Eating or drinking inside the grounds

Can you take photos inside Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?

Yes. Personal photos and quiet videos are welcome almost everywhere. Talking while recording is not allowed inside because it breaks the peaceful atmosphere, so vlogging does not work here. Think of it as the same rule as in a library or a place of worship anywhere in the world.

Tripods, large cameras, stabilisers, and drones need prior approval from mosque authorities. Stay respectful and low-key. Anything that looks like a performance will be stopped by staff.

If you are planning a commercial shoot or an influencer session, request written permission in advance from the mosque administration.

Is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque accessible?

Yes. The mosque offers wheelchair access and shuttle (club car) services from the parking areas to the entrance. The walkways through the mall and into the courtyard are wide and level. Most facilities are designed with accessibility in mind.

Check the official website before your trip for any updates to accessibility services or entry arrangements.

Where can you eat near the mosque?

Eating, drinking (including water), and smoking are not allowed anywhere inside the mosque grounds. The Souk Al Jami mall, which connects directly to the entrance corridor, has cafes and restaurants. Many visitors plan a meal there after the visit.

It is a sensible plan. By the time you finish walking the courtyard and the interior, you will likely be ready for both food and air conditioning.

Can you visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque with kids?

Yes. Children are welcome, but they must stay with an adult and follow the same dress and behaviour guidelines as everyone else. Strollers are straightforward to use in the parking areas and the mall walkway.

The Mosque's scale and visual richness tend to hold the attention of older children well. Very young infants may get restless during a longer visit, so think about timing. Early morning with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures tends to work better for families.

How to get there from Dubai

The drive from Dubai takes 90 to 120 minutes. The route follows one main highway and is simple to navigate. Many visitors choose an organised tour because it includes transport, timing, and a guide. Driving yourself is also easy if you prefer flexibility.

Most people make a full day of Abu Dhabi, combining the mosque with other attractions such as Qasr Al Watan or Emirates Palace. Our Abu Dhabi City Sightseeing Tour covers the mosque plus key landmarks, with return transfers from Dubai included. Private tours allow you to skip stops you are not interested in.
